Confined Space Safety Training

Confined Space Safety Training provides employees with the knowledge needed to safely identify confined spaces, recognize hazards, and follow proper entry procedures before work begins. This course explains what qualifies as a confined space, the difference between permit-required and non-permit spaces, and why confined space work presents serious risks if not properly controlled.
The training covers confined space hazards such as hazardous atmospheres, oxygen deficiency or enrichment, toxic gases, mechanical hazards, engulfment risks, and physical dangers commonly found in tanks, pits, vaults, and equipment housings. Employees learn the purpose and required components of a confined space entry permit, including hazard assessments, atmospheric testing, ventilation, PPE, communication methods, and rescue planning.
This course also defines the roles and responsibilities of authorized entrants, attendants, entry supervisors, and rescue personnel. Employees are trained on entry procedures, continuous monitoring, permit termination, emergency response planning, and non-entry rescue principles.
This training is designed to support OSHA confined space requirements under 29 CFR 1910.146 and must be combined with site-specific procedures, hands-on practice, and employer-provided equipment training where required. Employers are responsible for ensuring site-specific procedures, hands-on instruction, and any additional requirements applicable to their operations are met.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the training take?
The course takes approximately 50 minutes to complete. Employees can pause and resume at their convenience.
Is this training OSHA compliant?
This training is designed to help organizations meet OSHA requirements for workplace safety. It supports OSHA 29 CFR 1910.146 (Permit-Required Confined Spaces) requirements. This course provides the knowledge component and must be combined with site-specific procedures, hands-on practice, atmospheric testing training, and rescue drills.
Do employees receive a certificate?
Yes. Upon successful completion, employees can generate a certificate of completion. All progress is stored and can be accessed in the main dashboard under Learner Report.
How often should employees take this training?
OSHA requires confined space refresher training when job duties change, when the confined space program changes, or when knowledge gaps are identified. Many employers provide annual confined space refresher training.
Can we track completion?
Yes. Training Director provides real-time tracking of assignments, completion status, and quiz scores.
What is a permit-required confined space?
A permit-required confined space contains or has the potential to contain a hazardous atmosphere, materials that could engulf an entrant, internal configurations that could trap or asphyxiate, or other recognized serious safety or health hazards. Entry requires a written permit and specific safety controls.
What are confined space atmospheric hazards?
Confined space atmospheric hazards include oxygen deficiency (below 19.5%), oxygen enrichment (above 23.5%), flammable gases or vapors, and toxic gases. Atmospheric testing must be performed before entry and continuously during work.
Does this training cover atmospheric testing?
This course explains why confined space atmospheric testing is required, what must be tested, and the acceptable ranges. Hands-on atmospheric testing training with actual gas monitors must be provided by the employer.
What is non-entry rescue?
Non-entry rescue allows rescuers to remove an entrant from a confined space without entering themselves, typically using retrieval systems. This is the preferred rescue method when feasible and must be planned before entry begins.
Does this replace hands-on confined space training?
No. This online course provides the knowledge foundation. Employers must also provide hands-on training including atmospheric testing procedures, equipment use, communication systems, rescue drills, and site-specific entry procedures.
What if we don’t have a confined space program?
You can quickly build one using Smarter Risk’s policy builder. The policy builder guides you through creating a comprehensive confined space program that covers space identification, entry permits, atmospheric testing requirements, rescue procedures, and all essential safety controls.
