Life Safety and Emergency Evacuation (NFPA 101)

Means of Egress Training Course

This Life Safety Training course provides employees with a practical understanding of workplace life safety principles and emergency preparedness. The course explains how building features, procedures, and employee actions work together to protect occupants during fires and other emergencies.

The training covers key life safety topics including means of egress, exit routes, exit doors, exit signage, emergency lighting, alarm systems, evacuation procedures, and Emergency Action Plans (EAPs). Employees learn how these elements support safe evacuation and what is expected of them during an emergency.

This course focuses on awareness and understanding of life safety requirements rather than technical design, inspections, or facility modifications. It helps employees recognize unsafe conditions, understand evacuation procedures, and respond appropriately during emergencies.

The content is aligned with life safety concepts found in NFPA 101 Life Safety Code and applicable OSHA workplace safety expectations, providing knowledge-based training to support workplace safety programs.

This course provides knowledge and awareness training only. It does not replace site-specific evaluations, fire protection engineering, or regulatory determinations by authorities having jurisdiction. Employers remain responsible for compliance with applicable OSHA standards, NFPA codes, and local requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the training take?
The course takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. Employees can complete the training in one session or break it into multiple sessions at their convenience.

Is this training OSHA compliant?
This training is designed to help organizations meet OSHA requirements for workplace safety. It covers OSHA 29 CFR 1910.36, 1910.37, and 1910.38 requirements for exit routes, means of egress, and Emergency Action Plans. The training supports employer compliance with OSHA exit route standards and NFPA 101 Life Safety Code principles. Employers are responsible for ensuring site-specific procedures, facility-specific evacuation plans, and any additional requirements applicable to their operations are met. This training provides foundational knowledge but does not replace site-specific emergency planning or facility evaluations.

Do employees receive a certificate?
Yes. Upon successful completion, employees can generate a certificate of completion. All progress is stored and accessible in the main dashboard under Learner Report.

How often should employees take this training?
We recommend annual refresher training at minimum, with immediate training for new employees and whenever evacuation procedures or facility layouts change.

Can we track completion across our workforce?
Yes. Training Director provides real-time tracking of assignments, completion status, and quiz scores for all employees.

What is means of egress?
Means of egress is a continuous and unobstructed path of travel from any point in a building to a public way (street or open space). It consists of three parts: the exit access (path to the exit), the exit (protected path through the building), and the exit discharge (path from the exit to outside). Understanding means of egress is critical for safe evacuation during emergencies.

Does this training cover fire extinguisher use?
No. This training focuses on life safety, means of egress, and evacuation procedures. Fire extinguisher training is covered in our Fire Safety and Fire Extinguisher Training course. Organizations should provide both courses to ensure comprehensive emergency preparedness.

What is the difference between exit signs and directional signs?
Exit signs mark the location of exits and must be illuminated and visible at all times. Directional signs (exit access signs) guide people toward exits when the exit itself is not immediately visible. Both are required components of means of egress and must be maintained to ensure safe evacuation.
